€280 In. 23 Sales Out.

This campaign spent less than a single freelance day rate — €280 across 30 days — and came out the other side with 2,250 clicks and 23 tracked sales at €12.17 each.

Most people assume Google Ads only works once you have a serious budget behind it. The difference here was not money, it was structure. Every euro was pointed at searches that already carried purchase intent, protected by a negative keyword list built before launch, matched to relevant ad copy and landing pages, and optimised against verified conversion data rather than assumptions.

The Challenge

A Budget Too Small to Waste

Small budgets cannot afford wasted clicks. With €280 to spend across a full month, every euro had to reach someone who was already close to buying. Beauty and salon retail is a competitive auction: bidding on the obvious head terms is expensive, the results pages are crowded, and there is very little room to absorb traffic that was never going to convert.

The Budget Couldn’t Absorb Broad Targeting

Roughly €9 a day. At that level, broad generic beauty keywords can swallow an entire day’s budget before lunch on people who are browsing rather than buying. Broad targeting was never a realistic option.

Clicks Had To Be Affordable

The campaign still needed enough traffic to learn from. A high cost per click would have capped the number of sales available and left too little data to optimise against.

Conversions Had To Be Real

Success was measured in tracked purchases, not vanity metrics. Page views and add-to-carts were not counted as wins.

Google Ads Strategy

How a €280 Google Ads Campaign Produced 23 Sales

Small budgets do not win by shouting louder. They win by arriving at the exact moment somebody is ready to buy. The whole account was built to intercept high-intent searches — and to buy nothing else.

01

Target The Bottom Of The Funnel Only

Only commercial and product-level searches were targeted. Awareness traffic, research queries and general beauty interest terms were left alone. The account bid on people describing what they wanted to buy, not people learning about the category.

02

Build Negative Keywords Before Ads

Negative keyword research was completed before a single ad went live, so wasted spend was prevented rather than discovered later in a report.

03

Tight Ad Groups, Relevant Copy & Landing Pages

Each keyword group was matched to its own ad copy and its own landing page. When the search, the ad and the page all say the same thing, Google rewards it: Quality Score rises, ad rank improves and cost per click falls. Relevance is the cheapest optimisation available.

04

Conversion Tracking Before Spending

Purchase tracking was installed and verified before optimisation began. Without accurate conversion data every decision that follows is guesswork, and a €280 budget has no room for guesswork.

05

Optimise Search Terms, Not Assumptions

Search term reports were reviewed weekly. The account was shaped by what people actually typed, not by what the keyword planner predicted they would.

06

Prove Small Then Scale

The campaign started deliberately lean while it collected data. Once converting searches were identified, budget was moved toward them rather than spread evenly. Scale followed proof, not the other way round.

Highlights

What the Numbers Actually Mean

€12.17 Per Sale

Customers were acquired at an efficient cost. In repeat-purchase categories such as salon and hair care products the first order is rarely the last, so lifetime value can lift profitability well beyond the initial acquisition figure.

2,250 Clicks For €280

Click volume at this level came from keyword relevance, precise targeting and Quality Score work rather than from raw budget. Relevance lowered the cost of every auction the account entered.

A Model That Scales

The campaign produced more than revenue. It produced a tested structure that can absorb a larger budget without losing efficiency.

Why Small-Budget Campaigns Are Worth Running Properly

€280 delivered more than sales. It bought certainty, and certainty is what makes the next budget decision straightforward rather than speculative.

Takeaways

Four Lessons From a €280 Campaign

Budget Size Doesn’t Decide Performance — Structure Does

A small, well-structured campaign will regularly outperform a large, careless one. Where the money goes matters more than how much of it there is.

Negative Keywords Create Better ROI

Every click prevented is budget redirected toward someone who might actually buy. Negatives are not housekeeping; they are a return-on-investment lever.

Relevance Is A Discount

When keyword, ad and landing page align, Quality Score rises and cost per click falls. Google effectively discounts advertisers who are genuinely useful to the searcher.

Tracking Comes First

Optimisation decisions are only as reliable as the conversion data behind them. Verify tracking before spending, not after.

Questions

Google Ads Case Study FAQ

It is enough to validate a campaign, and not enough to dominate a market. On a budget this size you cannot win crowded head-term auctions or run broad prospecting. What you can do is test whether a defined set of high-intent searches converts profitably, and produce real data to build on. €280 answered that question here. Scaling it is a separate decision, made with evidence rather than hope.

A low cost per click is usually the result of relevance rather than luck. Five things drove it: targeting high-intent long-tail searches instead of expensive head terms, an extensive negative keyword list built before launch, ad copy written to match each keyword group, landing pages that continued the same message, and the Quality Score improvements that follow from all of it. Google charges less when the ad genuinely answers the search.

It depends entirely on average order value and margin. At a healthy order value with solid margins, €12.17 is comfortable. On a low-priced single product it would not be. Beauty and salon products are also a repeat-purchase category, so the figure that usually matters is customer lifetime value rather than first-order profit.

Budget was deliberately increased once the search term data showed which queries were converting. The campaign started lean so it could learn cheaply, then pushed spend toward proven searches in the final stretch rather than spreading it evenly across the month.

The framework transfers: intent-first targeting, negatives before launch, tight ad groups, verified tracking, weekly search term work, then scale what converts. The results will not transfer identically. Competition, product range, pricing, margins and landing page quality all move the numbers.

Google Ads was one half of this brand’s search strategy. See how the same brand achieved organic growth through SEO — 17,900 organic clicks and 1.4 million Google impressions across twelve months.

All performance data shown is authentic and sourced directly from the Google Ads platform. Figures cover a 30-day campaign period and are reported exactly as recorded in the account. This project was delivered as a client engagement in the role of Google Ads Specialist.

Stop Paying For Clicks That Were Never Going To Buy

Most underperforming Google Ads accounts are not underfunded — they are unfocused. I build search campaigns that spend only where buying intent already exists, whether your budget is €280 or €28,000.
